#1 - A toxidez de diversas lantanas para bovinos e ovinos no Brasil

Neither all Lantana species nor all varieties which occur in Brazil are poisonous. Lantana samples collected at Boa Vista (Roraima), Castanhal (Pará), Cáceres (Mato Grosso), Serra Talhada (Pernambuco), Cabo Frio and Quatis (Rio de Janeiro), and Canoinhas (Santa Catarina) were toxic. All the other Lantana samples, collected at Cruzeiro do Sul (Acre), Castanhal (Pará), Chapada dos Guimarães and Lambari d’Oeste (Mato Grosso), Jaguaribe (Ceará), Vitória da Conquista and Wanderley (Bahia), Vitória (Espírito Santo), Vassouras, Parati and Itaguaí (Rio de Janeiro) revealed experimentally as non-toxic at a dose of 40g/kg. In all cases the lethal dose was 40 g/kg, with two exceptions: the sample collected at Canoinha (Santa Catarina) was much more toxic (10g/kg) and the one from Serra Talhada (Pernambuco) was much less toxic, as this last sample caused lethal poisoning only at a dosage of 40g/kg/day given during 30 days. Histories about the observation of photosensitization in cattle due to the ingestion of Lantana spp were obtained at Serra Talhada (Pernambuco), Cáceres (Mato Grosso), Cabo Frio and Quatis (Rio de Janeiro), and Canoinhas (Santa Catarina). No correlation could be established between the colour of the flowers of Lantana spp and the toxicity of the plants. This confirms reports from Australia that the toxic potential of the Lantana species is not necessarily related to the colour of their flowers.

#2 - Poisoning of cattle by Lantana spp. (Verbenaceae) in the States of Mato Grosso and Rio de Janeiro

Abstract in English:

The fresh leaves of Lantana tiliaefolia and L. camara var. nivea, collected respectively, in Cáceres in the State of Mato Grosso, and in Cabo Frio in the State of Rio de Janeiro, where severe outbreaks of photosensitization with high mortality in cattle had occurred, were given by mouth to bovines. The fresh leaves of L. camara var. aculeata collected in Vassouras and Itaguaí, also in the State of Rio de Janeiro, where no cases of photosensitization had been recorded, were also administered to bovines. In these experiments only the leaves from Cáceres and Cabo Frio were poisonous, causing the sarne hepatogenous photosensitization seen under natural conditions. Doses of 30 to 50 g of the fresh leaves/kg of body weight caused severe poisoning, whether given on one day or dubdivided into 5 daily doses. These doses given over a greater time span or smallar doses given once caused less severe poisoning. The symptoms which were observed in the first phase, when several animals died, lasted up to 15 days. They were: anorexia, restlessness, diminished or absence of rumen movements, photosensitization, with erythema and edema of the skin, jaundice, brown urine and scanty, dry feces. In the second phase that followed, there was mummification with the appearance of cracks and sloughing-off of pieces of skin, and occurrence of open, foul-smelling lesions. All other symptoms had disappeared. The main post-mortem finding in the animals which had died during the first phase was jaundice. The most important histopathological changes were found in the liver and kidney. The liver cells were swollen with foci of degeneration throughout the lobules. There was proliferation of the epithelial cells of the bile ducts, while in the kidneys, degeneration and lysis of the epithelial cells of the uriniferous tubules of the cortex was observed. Small foci of necrosis were present in the myocardium of one bovine. Although Lantana spp. are found throughout Brazil, it appears that the occurrence of mortality caused by the shrub is relatively rare. Based on the present study and on data from the literature, it would seem that in order for Lantana spp. poisoning to occur in the field, two conditions must be present: shipping and hunger of cattle.

Foram administradas por via oral, a bovinos jovens, as folhas frescas de Lantana tiliaefolia e L. camara var. nivea, procedentes respectivamente de Cáceres, Mato Grosso, e Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro, onde tinham ocorrido graves surtos de fotossensibilização com alta mortalidade em bovinos, e de L. camara var. aculeata, procedentes de Vassouras e Itaguaí, Rio de Janeiro, onde não havia históricos desta natureza. Nesses experimentos só as folhas procedentes de Cáceres e Cabo Frio se revelaram tóxicas, reproduzindo-se com elas o quadro de fotossensibilização hepatógena observado sob condições naturais. A administração de 30 a 50 g/kg, dadas de uma só vez ou subdivididas em até 5 doses diárias, causaram quadro grave de intoxicação. Essas doses, subdivididas em período maior, ou doses únicas menores causaram quadros de intoxicação menos graves. Os sintomas observados foram numa primeira fase com duração de até 15 dias - em que alguns animais morreram - anorexia, diminuição ou parada dos movimentos do rúmen, manifestações de fofossensibilização sob forma de eritema e edema, inquietação, icterícia, urina de cor marrom, fezes ressequidas; numa segunda fase que se seguia, havia mumificação com aparecimento de fendas e desprendimento de fragmentos da pele e ocorrência de feridas abertas com mau cheiro, tendo desaparecido todos os outros sintomas. Nos bovinos que morreram durante a primeira fase da intoxicação, o principal achado de necropsia foi icterícia generalizada. As principais alterações histopatológicas encontradas foram: no fígado, proliferação das células epiteliais das vias biliares, tumefação das células hepáticas, com focos de distribuição difusa pelos lóbulos em que as células hepáticas apresentavam processos degenerativos; no rim, degeneração e lise das células epiteliais dos túbulos uriníferos da cortical; no miocárdio de um bovino havia pequenos focos de necrose. É observado que, apesar de Lantana spp. ocorrer em todo o Brasil, aparentemente é relativamente rara a ocorrência de mortalidade por plantas deste gênero em bovinos. Em face dos dados obtidos no presente estudo e colhidos na literatura, parecem ser necessários dois fatores, para que ocorra a intoxicação por Lantana spp. sob condições naturais, transferência de bovinos e fome, além do fato de tratar-se de uma lantana tóxica e a planta existir em quantidade suficientemente grande na área.
